All motorized vehicles used in traffic will need winter approved tyres

The reason winter tires are a good idea for all vehicles that operate in traffic is because you need tyres that can handle the cold temperatures and also be able to provide safe and reliable grip on winter conditions. The heavier the vehicle is the more you need to have reliable grip to function properly and to make sure that you can get the vehicle to stop when needed. All the buses and trucks that operate in winter conditions are also using winter tyres for safe driving on winter roads.

After the surge of SUVs as being a safer vehicle than normal passenger cars, it is important to be informed that they do require winter approved tyres if they are to be driven on snow, ice or slippery conditions such as slush. Without proper tyres these vehicles will be less safe if they don’t have sufficient grip in these circumstances. The situation is further escalated by having an electric SUV or hybrid, as they are even heavier due to the need of many battery packs so that you can get a long distance on every charge. For this purpose, you will need to select tyres that are recommended for electrical vehicles, that then also have low rolling resistance so that you can maintain the long driving distance on every charge. The tyres will also have to be more wear resistant to handle the heavy weight and the higher torque associated with these vehicles.

When it comes to winter tyres or tyres that are approved for winter use, you have the two different winter tyres, the studded tyres and the non-studded tyres that are also commonly referred to as friction tyres. Then you have a few winter-approved all-weather tyres, that can be used during the whole year throughout all different weather and temperature conditions. This gives people a lot of freedom and flexibility, as they always have the safety of having tyres that can handle the whole range of weather conditions. To ensure that they are winter approved they should have the Alpine symbol on the sidewall of the tyres. It is not enough to have only the M+S marking, which only indicates that the tread is designed for mud and snow but doesn’t indicate that they can pass any performance tests on snow and ice.

For all-weather tyres it is more important to select premium tyres that can handle the full range of temperatures and the varying weather conditions. It isn’t easy to design something that can perform in so varying conditions. This is why it is better to change tyres to dedicated winter tyres, if you have winter conditions that warrant the change. However, even with winter tyres, you will need to make sure that you change the tyres in time before the winter weather comes, as otherwise you are in a worse situation. The all-weather tyres outperform summer tyres, so it is a valuable tyre option for areas that have very unstable weather conditions and winter weather are not always certain.
